Data Access Controls

Definition updated on November 2023

What are data access controls?

A method for controlling employee access to files in an organization is data access control. Utilizing the principle of least privilege (POLP), which entails identifying and limiting what data people have access to base on their positions within the organization, is part of this process. Access control is essential for upholding security, abiding by legal requirements, and improving accountability. Organizations may control employee access effectively, stop theft, damage, or unauthorized use of resources, save time and money through automated verification, and provide an audit trail for legal purposes by limiting access to authorized individuals. Any successful security and risk management plan must include access control.
