Natural Language Understanding

Definition updated on November 2023

What is Natural Language Understanding (NLU)?

The study of what human language actually means—as opposed to just what individual words say is known as natural language understanding (NLU) in the field of computer science. Immediately present in human communication, such as the emotion, effort, meaning, or objective behind a speaker's utterance, many of the connotations and inferences that natural language understanding tries to infer are there as well. To comprehend our language, it makes use of artificial intelligence and algorithms supported by vast informational resources. Natural Language Understanding enables computers to comprehend and react appropriately to the sentiments expressed in natural language writing without relying on computer language grammar.
