What is machine learning?

In the field of artificial intelligence known as machine learning, data is used to help computers "learn" and hence perform better. The term "machine learning" (ML) refers to the process of solving problems for which the development of algorithms by human programmers would be prohibitively expensive. Instead, the problems are resolved by assisting machines in "discovering" their "own" algorithms, without the need for any human-developed algorithms to explicitly instruct them on what to do.
