Data Encryption

Definition updated on November 2023

What is data encryption?

Data encryption is a security technique in which data is encoded and can only be viewed or decoded by someone who has the right encryption key. A person or entity trying to access encrypted data without authorization sees it as jumbled or unintelligible cipher text, also known as encrypted data. To prevent unethical or careless parties from obtaining sensitive data, data encryption is utilized. Encryption is a crucial component of a cybersecurity architecture because it makes it impossible to use intercepted data. It can be used for any type of data protection requirement, including the safeguarding of sensitive government information and individual credit card transactions. To create an encryption scheme that, in theory, can only be cracked with a lot of processing power, data encryption software, also known as an encryption algorithm or cypher, is employed.
